Hi, I’m Stephen.
(he/him/his)

I’m a Vancouver-based marketing and communications strategist, public engagement expert, and creative problem solver who loves to make real connection happen in a noisy world.

As a passionate advocate for meaningful public participation and rich storytelling, I bring over 15 years experience with public sector, corporate and non-profit clients.

Every project and community is unique and requires a specialized approach. I’m committed to delivering compelling, approachable and visually interesting communications and public engagement campaigns that tap into the skills and expertise of your team and community.

Where necessary, I partner with talented contractors and organizations to ensure the successful delivery of your projects.

In addition to being an IAP2 certified public participation professional, I have a Masters of Arts from Carleton University’s School of Canadian Studies and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia.

Have a project in mind that you’d like to collaborate on? Feel free to reach out to me at any time. The first coffee is on me.

Testimonals

What people have to say

“Stephen and I have collaborated on a number of successfully delivered public engagement projects over the years, including the City of Vancouver’s Places for People Downtown and We Choo$e – West End Participatory Budgeting Pilot.

Stephen’s approach to public engagement and interactive communications often involves rich and joyful storytelling elements, which communicate approachability and an ease of participation — both important components to an effective and inviting engagement process.

Stephen’s creativity and collaborative approaches demonstrate his understanding of the IAP2 Spectrum of Public Participation and his commitment to delivering meaningful public engagement.”

“Stephen supported the West End BIA as our marketing and communications lead for four years, where he helped activate our new brand, expand our marketing and communications capacity, and establish a strong voice for the West End business community.

Relationship building was an important part of Stephen’s work with the West End BIA, as illustrated through his ongoing efforts to engage and promote West End businesses, launch and cultivate Lumiere Vancouver artistic lighting event (now a successful annual celebration), and support the stakeholder engagement process around the creation of Jim Deva Plaza.”

Stephen Regan, Executive Director, West End Business Improvement Association

“The quality of Stephen Irving’s work was phenomenal. He elevated our communication strategy and gave us clear direction as a strategist. His recommendations enabled the Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility to launch our new brand, update our social media strategy, support fund development, restructure our staff to focus on their areas of strength, and much more.

From being a facilitator to mediating our focus groups, Stephen offered to help without hesitation. His high quality of work as a professional and individual is a constant reminder that we chose the best person to assist our communications strategy during our transition.”
